When applying for a training contract, Burges Salmon came highly recommended by a number of people as having a quality client base with a very strong reputation and, crucially, a client-focussed outlook. On looking into it further the combination of great people and a fantastic location was, and still is, a huge draw for me.
Much of the work I do involves working as part of a team with other departments across the firm, so the fact we are all under one roof is a real plus as it’s only ever a short walk to discuss a matter in person.
As an Associate in the Corporate unit, we are encouraged to maintain a broad range of work, rather than get pigeon holed into any one practice area. So there’s a real variety in the role which ranges across: mergers and acquisitions, general corporate advice, equity capital markets (Official List and AIM) and private equity. While this can be daunting it does mean you are continually learning, and there’s a really good training and support network to ensure you’re never out of your depth when tackling something for the first time. The open door policy that we have here has definitely remained, even as the firm continues to grow.
