The government has introduced a new points based system (PBS) to replace the existing work permit system. This means that with effect from November 2008 employers will have to hold a sponsorship licence if they want to recruit non-EEA nationals to work in the UK. Read more in this briefing.

The Government has recently released its statement of intent about how non-EEA students will be able to study in the UK under Tier 4 of the new points-based immigration system which is due to go live in February/March 2009. A major shake-up of the immigration system took place in 2008. Some of the changes affected recruitment processes and the documents that employers are required to keep about employees. Stiff penalties were introduced for non-compliance with the new rules so employers cannot afford to ignore the changes.
