John became partner and joint head of corporate tax in 2003. A practising solicitor he is also qualified as a Chartered Tax Advisor winning the Chartered Institute of Taxation's (CIOT) Institute Medal for best national performance and highest total marks in the November 1998 CTA exams.
Nationally, John chairs the CIOT's Capital Gains Tax and Investment Income Committee and is a member of the Law Society Capital Taxes Sub-Committee.

- conducting own advocacy before the Special Commissioners in Corbally Stourton case (2008) SpC 692
- advising a major US bank on the use of Cayman Purpose trusts to act as a securitisation vehicle for private equity funds
- creating Family Limited Partnership as an alternative to trusts for several clients
- creation of Employee Benefit Trust for Property Company
- commissioned by Barclays Wealth to provide detailed training to all their bankers specialising in non-domiciliary tax planning
