Michael joined Burges Salmon in 1994 as a trainee, and was made Partner in 2009. He works in the Environmental Law Unit and specialises in the following practice areas:

  • Environmental Litigation
  • Carbon Law
  • Nuclear
  • Water

He has substantial experience of running cases in both criminal courts and civil courts to the House of Lords as well as other methods of dispute resolution including arbitration and mediation. Recent examples of work include:

  • advising a multi-national client on the environmental aspects of a breach of a global contract/indemnity claim
  • advising a petrochemical company on a migrating pollution claim
  • advising a motor auction business on a claim for losses arising from contamination of its vehicles caused by repair works at an adjacent road bridge.
  • Successfully appealing an Abatement Notice in relation to odour served on Express Contract Drying Limited
  • Advising a group of landowners in relation to a claim against a windfarm operator for a share of the subsidies paid to it
  • Advising the Crown Estate on Energy Performance Certificates
  • Advising a farmer about claims against DEFRA arising from environmental damage to his farm from the burying of carcasses and ash during the Foot and Mouth crisis including claims under the Human Rights Act 1998. R (on the application of Feakins) –v- Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs [2004] 1 WLR 1761, [2003] Env L.R 20 and [2003] EWHC 033.

Michael is described by Chambers and Partners as "fantastically talented at assessing complex legal problems". He regularly lectures on environmental law and contributes articles to Environmental journals.
