Simon joined Burges Salmon as a trainee in 2004 and qualified into the Environmental Law Unit in 2006. Simon advises on a broad range of contentious and non-contentious environmental issues and specialises in the following practice areas:

  • Environmental Litigation
  • Environmental Compliance and Regulation
  • Criminal Prosecutions
  • Water
  • Contaminated Land

Simon regularly advises on contentious environmental matters in both the criminal courts and the civil courts as well as non-contentious regulatory compliance with particular focus on water and contaminated land. Simon has also established a specialism in flooding claims. Recent examples of Simon's work include:

  • advising in multi-national chemicals industry client on the environmental aspects of a breach of a global contract / indemnity claim
  • advising a multi-national pharmaceuticals industry client on a contamination claim relating to a site in Sweden
  • advising a multi-national petrochemicals company on a claim for migrating pollution in the Technology and Construction Court
  • advising a motor auction business on a claim for losses arising from contamination of its vehicles caused by repair works at an adjacent road bridge
  • advising on environmental issues arising from the closure of a large chemical manufacturing site
  • defending a major land owner from a prosecution brought by Natural England under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981
  • representing various clients in the Magistrates' Courts relating to water pollution offences under the Water Resources Act 1991
  • advising a manufacturing client on an appeal under the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Trading Scheme Regulations 2005

Simon has lectured to the Institute of Licensing's Annual Conference on the interaction between the various regimes for regulating noise and contributes to the In House Lawyer Magazine and The Boardroom Magazine.
