Cheryl joined Burges Salmon as a trainee in 2004 and is a member of the Nuclear Law Team at Burges Salmon. She regularly advises on a wide range of nuclear, environmental and regulatory issues arising across the nuclear sector involving interaction throughout the supply chain, site licence companies, parent body organisations, government and the regulators.
Cheryl spent 14 months on secondment at the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) advising, both during and following secondment, on the various aspects of industry restructuring, including the competitions for the role of the Parent Body Organisation and also the statutory transfer schemes. She also spent time on secondment to the former Nirex which has now become the Radioactive Waste Management Division of NDA.
Specific experience includes advising on:
- the practical application and scope of nuclear legislation, in particular, nuclear liability both on national and international levels in respect of contractual obligations, on-site issues, transport and also the practical impact of legal developments arising from amendments to the international conventions
- commercial transactions and risk management, both in respect of decommissioning and also in preparation for new build, including advising on the nuclear, environmental and regulatory aspects of NDA land sales and more recently, regarding the interaction between neighbouring site licences
- non-radioactive and radioactive contaminated land, disposal of radioactive waste and licensing issues.
Cheryl is a member of the Nuclear Institute, the International Nuclear Lawyers Association and participates in the Decommissioning Working Group and the Legal and Finance Affairs Working Group of the Nuclear Industry Association. She also presents on nuclear law topics at conferences and seminars.
