Burges Salmon launches Halliwells' trainees rescue plan
02 August 2010
Burges Salmon is putting forward a plan to persuade the legal profession to rescue the careers of trainees and those whose offers of training contracts have been withdrawn as a result of the collapse of Halliwells.
All leading law firms in the country are being asked to consider taking on just one of these candidates, either to complete their training contract, or to start a new training contract.
Through its website, Burges Salmon is offering to collect the CVs of former Halliwells’ trainees whose training contracts have been prematurely ended, or those who have been notified that their offer of a training contract has been withdrawn.
The senior partner of Burges Salmon, Stephen McNulty said: "I believe it is incumbent on the solicitors' profession as a whole to do something to help these individuals whose professional lives could be seriously de-railed by the withdrawal of their training contracts. All firms have a responsibility to the profession and I believe that it is right they should consider co-operating in the scheme so that as many training contracts as possible are re-instated." He has already gained the support in principle of a number of senior partners to whom he has proposed the plan.
Law firms and former Halliwells' trainees interested in taking part in this scheme should register their interest on the recruitment section of the Burges Salmon website at www.burges-salmon.com/careers. There, trainees will find a form to complete and will be asked to submit a copy of their CV.
Helen Scott-Lawler, a member of the firm’s Partnership Committee with responsibility for people, explains: "When registering on our website each trainee will be asked to stipulate which part of the country they are prepared to work, so that their CV can be forwarded to appropriate firms."
"We aim to keep the legal press fully informed of the progress of this initiative and will encourage credit to be given to firms who respond to this challenge," concludes Stephen.
