Chambers UK 2012 - leading individual

Ian joined Burges Salmon in 1990 and became a partner in 1999. He is best known for his work in the nuclear and environmental sector. He is recognised as a national leader in the nuclear sector by Chambers and Partners and Who's Who Legal said he "is one of the UK's leading authorities on nuclear power". He jointly leads a team of 20 lawyers specialising in nuclear, renewables and environmental law.

Ian is currently the co–chair of the Nuclear Industry Association's Legal Affairs committee.

Ian has been a member of the International Nuclear Lawyers' Association since 1999. He spoke at the 2005 conference on the legal aspects of storage of waste under the sea bed, and in 2007 on the laws concerning radioactive contaminated land. In 2008 Ian presented at a conference in Montreal on pre-licensing of nuclear reactors in the UK and in 2009 he spoke at the INLA conference in Toronto on issues around nuclear new build in the UK. In 2012 Ian contributed to the nuclear publication 'Infrastructure and methodologies for the justification of nuclear power programmes'.

Ian has worked for various clients on most of the UK's nuclear licenced sites. He is client partner for the firm's relationship with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, UKAEA , Imperial College, Magnox , Energy Solutions, Radsafe CLG Limited, and a number of other nuclear companies and institutions. Prior to its amalgamation into the NDA Ian advised UK Nirex Limited on all aspects of radioactive waste management, and that work now continues with the RWMD.

Burges Salmon's work for NDA has included the multi million pound disposal of land and sites for nuclear new build at Wylfa, Bradwell, Oldbury and Sellafield. In 2010 "The Lawyer" magazine listed Ian in its Hot 100 lawyers.

Ian is also a well known environmental and climate change lawyer. In that respect Ian also advises clients in the chemical, transport and waste sectors. Ian has worked for the Carbon Trust since its formation in 2001. He is also a prominent lawyer in the chemicals sector.
