Health and Safety

Chambers Guide to the Legal Profession 2008 recognises our H&S team as being in the upper tiers of UK specialists and describes us as "A potent force … at the  cutting edge of the issues"  and "offering the best advice to commercial clients in unexpected health and safety difficulties".

The team has strength in depth. It includes a partner qualified, and operationally experienced, as a chartered civil engineer, a former Police officer and lawyers with degree level scientific/chemistry qualifications.

Safety incidents create civil, criminal, regulatory and insurance issues. We are experienced and skilled in dealing with each of those strands and how they affect each other.

The harsh realities of the criminal law increasingly can impact businesses and their management. It is essential that advisers in the area understand business but can also operate at the sharp end. We understand the dynamics of both the board room and the police station and how they impact each other.

We advise (depending on specific client need) on Policy, Strategic, Operational and Incident levels. Our work therefore spans the range between advice or responses on draft legislation and UK policy reviews (for example on corporate manslaughter or evidence to a Parliamentary Select Committee) to representing organisations or companies during investigations or subsequent prosecution. For more detail see Regulatory.

We work with organisations in sectors including:

  • Construction
  • Manufacturing (including chemicals, consumer goods; food)
  • Agri-business
  • Waste
  • Transport (Rail; Road and Aviation)
  • FM and Logistics
  • Public sector, not-for-profit and Charities

The specialist areas within our Health & Safety practice include:
