Equality and Diversity

We treat everyone equally and with the same attention, courtesy and respect regardless of:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender
  • marital status
  • race, racial group, colour, ethnic origin or nationality
  • religion or belief
  • sexual orientation
  • working pattern.

We are opposed to all forms of unlawful and unfair discrimination. We adopt the Law Society's model policy on Anti-Discrimination and seek to promote equality of treatment and opportunity in employment. We avoid unlawful discrimination in our dealings with each other, our clients and third parties. Selection for employment, promotion, training or any other benefit is on the basis of individual aptitude and ability.

To support our diversity agenda, we are members of Working Families, the Employers' Forum on Disability and Stonewall's Diversity Champion Programme. We are also a signatory to The Law Society's Diversity and Inclusion Charter.

The firm's Director of HR is its Diversity Champion and chairs our Diversity Committee.

Diversity Initiatives

We are continuing to focus our efforts on three major diversity initiatives:

  • encouraging the career aspirations of women and working parents at Burges Salmon
  • introducing revised flexible working policies, practices and procedures
  • our firm-wide online diversity training

Statistics

We regularly undertake a diversity data collection exercise where information is provided on an anonymous and voluntary basis. Including:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Ethnicity
  • Flexible working
  • Gender
  • Religion
  • Sexual Orientation

Our 2011 survey was completed by 73% of people at Burges Salmon.
